In CATAN (formerly The Settlers of Catan), players compete to establish dominance on the resource-rich island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads. Each turn begins with a dice roll that determines which terrain tiles produce resources like brick, wood, wheat, ore, and sheep. Players use these resources to expand their territory, trade with others, and earn points.
The island’s layout is unique in every game, with hexagonal tiles representing resource-producing terrain types randomly arranged in a honeycomb pattern. Number tokens on each tile determine which dice rolls will activate resource production. Ports along the coastline allow players to trade resources at favorable rates, while a robber piece adds a strategic twist, allowing players to disrupt opponents’ plans.
Victory requires careful planning, resource management, and strategic trading. Players earn points by building settlements and cities, claiming the longest road or largest army, and acquiring certain development cards. The first to reach 10 points claims victory and becomes the ruler of Catan!
